LC3 Cement

LC3 has the composition of 50% clinker, 30% calcined clay, 15% crushedlimestone and 5% gypsum

The remaining cement is a blend of crushed limestone and calcined clay.

LC3 is a ternary cement that can achieve strengths similar to OPC even atclinker factors as low as 40% to 50%.

The production of each tons of cement releases more than 800kg equivalentof carbon dioxide

Substituting a fraction of the Portland cement used to make concrete withalternative material is a well-established way of cutting emissions

Commonly used industrial waste products -slag from steel industry or fly ashfrom coal power plants -are not available in large enough quantities to meetthe demand

Advantages of LC3

Limestone, calcined clay is abundantly available
Lower capital because no change of equipment or additional training ofconstruction workers is required
Manufacturing of LC3 cement involves reduction of clinker in the mix, thispractice helps in reducing the consumption of cement overall.
Reduced CO2 emissions
Saves energy, emissions and waste water.
Use of limestone in cement in cement also increases its workability and manyother properties durability to such extent

Production of LC3 Cement

Clays containing 50% to 60% of kaolinite are calcined at 700°C to 800°C toremove its chemically attached hydroxyl groups
Limestones with as little as 35% CaO and dolomitic limestoneswith as little as29% CaO and 21% MgO is suitable for LC3.
The calcined clay and limestone can be ground or blended with normalclinkers and gypsum available in India
